News tickers and headlines and statistics are daily reminders of precisely how plagued our culture remains by issues of violence across differences; conflicts between young people and law enforcement, conflict in the middle east, protesters camped out on the front steps of the US supreme court. Startlingly less visible, however, are the individuals and communities working amidst and against those traumas to improve the lives of young people, and young people themselves. And less visible, still, are the many small ways those individuals and communities love, heal and build together to continue fighting for equity, access and social justice. This convening, building on the many critical practices and foundational pillars that have become synonymous with this remarkable national conference – now celebrating its 19th year – aims to challenge and redefine that notion.
Urban Word NYC, the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development and Columbia University’s Teachers College present the 2016 Preemptive Education Conference, featuring a dynamic weekend training series that engages the best practices in arts-based pedagogy, social justice education and culturally responsive teaching. This year’s theme is Radical Joy & Self-Love in the Age of Black Lives Matter.
The annual conference is 3-day experience designed for educators, mentors, administrators, guidance counselors, community leaders, education students, hip hop and spoken word educators and practitioners, and anyone committed to urban education.
Creative Track: Arts-based sessions designed to help foster creative expression. Largely for artists and budding teaching artists searching for practices to use in their own creative spaces.
Educator Track: Pedagogical practices shaped in and molded for formal and informal school contexts. Largely for teachers.
Organizer Track: Practices focused on creative programming and approaches to leadership outside the school setting. Largely for activists, organizers and program administrators.
Participants can gain a better understanding of the scope of hip hop history, culture, and politics and deepen their practice as urban educators, and engage in best practice approaches to student-centered learning.

Dr. Maxine Greene was one of the most important and prolific philosphers around creativity, education, and the social imagination. The opening lecture of Urban Word NYC’s Preemptive Education Conference honors her legacy, by feature one artist and academic who embody her spirit and vision for education in the 21st century. This year’s speakers will be Aja Monet and Dr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz.

Over the last 20 years, the Youth Spoken Word movement has grown all across the country. At its best, we’ve witnessed the power of spoken word develop a generation of thoughtful leaders, acclaimed artists, and ground-shifting organizers. We’ve gathered some of the nation’s leading academics, poets and arts administrators, alum of the youth movement they have taken the charge for, to discuss where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re about to go. Join us for an evening of performance and conversation!
Moderated by Dr. Jamila Lyiscott & Award Winning Writers, Organizers and Arts Administrators Safia Elhillo, Charlotte Abotsi, Nate Marshall, and José Olivarez. Also featuring performances by Urban Word NYC youth poets.
