You are invited to attend the book release party for Black Fatherhood: Trials & Tribulations, Testimony & Triumph, by author, Khalid Akil White! On Friday, October 28th at 5pm, join Dr. White and his guests at Oakland Hot Plate in Downtown Oakland to purchase a copy of the book, enjoy locally sourced and consciously crafted eats, and hear a reading!
Fatherhood is one of the most challenging jobs in the world, and it becomes even tougher when one must combat harmful stereotypes. Mass media and popular culture bombards modern American with propaganda that portrayals of ‘the irresponsible Black man’, the missing ‘baby daddy’, the ‘deadbeat dad’, ‘the absentee father’, the ‘incarcerated Black male’, etc.; seemingly, an endless number of Black men have and continue to be ‘absent’. Dr. White provides the reader with a tender, moving argument against the stereotype of the absentee Father. The men interviewed share openly about cultural expectations, challenging traditional gender roles, recall experiences of trauma with their own fathers, and discuss family legacy of cohesiveness with cultural context.
Paperback copies of the book will be $25.00 (color copy). Please RSVP and indicate how many copies of the book you would like. Signed copies will be available for purchase.
Please register or decline by October 14th.
