Our History

Convent Avenue Baptist Church was founded on February 4, 1942 by Dr. John W. Saunders, formerly pastor of the Walker Memorial Baptist Church. Two years earlier, Dr. Saunders, already in his seventies, had formed a group known as the “Kingdom Builders.” The Kingdom Builders held services in the former Congress Casino and the old Baptist Temple

Our Beliefs

Convent Avenue Baptist Church is a Christian fellowship whose head is our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that the foremost mission of the church is to proclaim the Gospel and bring souls to Christ. Here are more of our congregation’s guiding principles.

We believe in God, our Father and Creator; Jesus Christ, the Son and Savior; and the Holy Spirit, the Comforter—and that these three are One. (John 17:20-23, 14:26, 15:26) We also believe in “One Lord, one faith, and one baptism.” (Ephesians 4:5).
