Overview
Ghana, is a west African country, bounded on the north by Burkina Faso, on the east by Togo, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean,and on the west by Côte d’Ivoire.
Formerly a British colony known as the Gold Coast, was led to independence by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on the 6th of March, 1957. Ghana became the first black nation in sub-Saharan Africa to achieve independence from colonial rule.
The country is named after the ancient empire of Ghana, from which the ancestors of the inhabitants of the present country are thought to have migrated.
Ghana recognizes the United States of America as a champion of democracy, scientific innovation and social justice. Over the years she has pursued these ideals with prudence and single-mindedness. Beyond that she has lent the weight of her moral sanction and material support especially to the less endowed countries. In Ghana’s experience, the United States of America has been a principal prop and pillar of Ghana’s development since her independence in 1957. These development assistance have come through various agencies such as the Peace Corps, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Africa Development Foundation, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, among others.
